Elizabeth Schulte On Bipartisanship

Over at Socialist Worker Elizabeth Schulte explains what Barack Obama’s promise to pursue “bipartisanship” will mean.

What do you think?

Here are my first thoughts: I basically agree with what she is saying. Though I think she downplays the value of post-partisan politics. Part of the status quo that needs to be challenged is the adversarial nature of politics. This doesn’t mean we can’t or shouldn’t disagree. We should all stand up for what we believe in, while at the same time be able to sit down with the so-called other side. There are more than two sides, making it more and more irrelevant to talk in terms of sides. This article is meant, so far as I can tell, to continue to put pressure on Obama and to help cut through the Obama euphoria spreading the nation, which could disable citizen organizing (the real body of democracy). But, this article also sides too much, not recognizing the commonsense-radical that is beyond sides. Or, am I just being too optimistic?
